There are two primary types of hiking boots available, each of which has their own specific use. The first type of hiking boot is the day hiking boot. These boots, which usually weigh less than 3 pounds per pair, are designed for simple day hikes or very lightweight backpacking (pack weight generally less than 20 pounds or so). Day hiking boots, at least those designed well, will give you plenty of ankle support for day hikes, excellent traction on the rocks, and will also be comfortable. The second primary type of hiking boot is the backpacking boot. Backpacking boots are designed for people carrying heavy backpacks. These boots provide firmer ankle support to help prevent the weight of the pack from twisting one of your ankles. They also provide superb traction on both the rocks and slippery surfaces. Due to the weight of backpacking boots (not uncommon to weigh 4 to 5 pounds), these hiking boots are less comfortable and kind of overkill for simple day hikes.
