Civil War troops relive the event that took place in 1864, in New Market Virginia

The Battle of New Market, May 15th, 1864

Major General Franz Sigel, with a force of about 6,500, was the latest in a series of Northern generals who tried to conquer the Shenandoah Valley. It was a region crucial to the Southern cause. The western Virginia valley's legendary fertility made the "Breadbasket of the Confederacy" essential to supplying crops and meat for Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
